ASP Committees

December 28th, 2007
  • Social Committee
    • It is the responsibility of the Social Committee to cater lunch on behalf of the speakers hosted by ASP every Wednesday during Organizational hour.  We provide a tasty assortment of meals from local restaurants to help show our members that we appreciate their weekly support of ASP.  The Social Committee also provides treats to sustain the Executive Board during their monthly meetings.  Our biggest undertaking is the planning of the ASP officer turn-over dinner at the end of each Fall semester.
  • Heartburn Committee
    • Student pharmacists across the country have the opportunity to help heartburn sufferers live healthier and more productive lives. APhA-ASP has partnered with Procter and Gamble and the National Heartburn Alliance to help Americans Get Heartburn Smart with the Heartburn Awareness Challenge. This new patient care project will allow student pharmacists to work on their presentation and clinical skills while educating the public on heartburn. Student pharmacists will be able to recommend lifestyle modifications to decrease the number of episodes and the severity of heartburn, recommend OTC medications sufferers can take and refer sufferers to their physician when medical attention is needed.
  • Diabetes Committee
    • The Operation Diabetes Committee raises awareness about diabetes in the community. During the fall semester we have a booth at Dawgtoberfest, and then in the spring semester we help at the annual Diabetes Expo in Atlanta and organize the Latin Health Fair. We are also going to try and get involved with Kamp Kudzu during the summer. Recently, the amount of people diagnosed with diabetes has double, especially in the South. At Operation Diabetes we preach learning through experience, and so we help to organize pharmacy students volunteer at the Mercy Health Clinic, and get hands on experience teaching and counseling local diabetic patients. We have two main goals: teach pharmacy students about diabetes, and then teach the community. If you want to get involved or just have questions email: Jake Galdo (galdoj@rx.uga.edu) 2nd year or Dominique Gardner (gardnerd@rx.uga.edu) 1st year
  • Immunization Committee
    • Operation Immunizations is a committee designed to educate the community about the importance of proper immunizations and health care. Some of the projects include: working with local health care facilities, Latin Health Fair, campus awareness, and Dawgtoberfest. Our goal for 2008 is to reach out and educate at least 2,400 people.
  • Women’s Committee
    • The mission of the Women’s Health Committee is to positively influence the health and well being of the women of Clarke County.  Our main goal is to educate women on a wide  variety of topics including sexual health, breast cancer, heart disease, contraception, osteoporosis and preventative medicine.  This year we will be focusing on expanding the scope and activities of the committee.  Our projects include participation in local health fairs, hosting a radio show on a women’s health topic, and visiting with women at various locations in Clarke county to impart information and answer health related questions.  We hope that through education we can empower women to make positive decisions about their own health.
  • Community Service Committee
    • The Community Service Committee of the Academy of Student Pharmacists are dedicated to promoting the practice of pharmacy and serving the community.  We believe that pharmacy should not benefit only the health aspect of our community, but instead branch out and encompass other aspects of quality of life.  Thus, we have embarked on a multi-faceted mission to better our community through health and education oriented service.  The current projects we are trying to develop include days at the Athens Habitat ReStore, build days for Athens Habitat for Humanity, and afternoon and after school tutoring programs at various schools in the Athens region.  We also have plans to set up a partnership with the Nurses’ Clinic in the future.
  • AIDS Committee
    • The purpose of the APhA-ASP AIDs committee is to help in the fight against AIDs/HIV through prevention and education programs.  With events like Dawgtoberfest, Pharmfest, AIDs Walk/Run Athens and others, the committee seeks to make a difference in both the UGA community and the Athens community as a whole.
  • Smoking Cessation
    • ASP-Smoking Cessation Committee’s goal is to educate the UGA and Athens community about the risks of smoking and the benefits of quitting.
Another goal of our committee is to create awareness about the important role that pharmacists play in assisting patients to quit smoking due to their training and knowledge.  We advise and assist patients in finding ways to quit smoking by developing a plan, using support groups, quitlines, and/or medications. We participate in Dawgtober Fest where we join all the other committees in the biggest health event of the UGA College of Pharmacy. During spring we have a Health Latin Fair targeted to the Hispanic community. Other projects are still being planned.
